Dark Souls is the new action role-playing game from the developers who brought you Demon’s Souls, FromSoftware. Dark Souls will have many familiar features: A dark fantasy universe, tense dungeon crawling, fearsome enemy encounters and unique online interactions. Dark Souls is a spiritual successor to Demon’s, not a sequel. Prepare for a new, despair-inducing world, with a vast, fully-explorable horizon and vertically-oriented landforms. Prepare for a new, mysterious story, centered around the King’s Crowns and the original, now dying flame at the center of the world. But most of all, prepare to die. You will face countless murderous traps, countless darkly grotesque monsters and several gargantuan, supremely powerful demons and dragons. You must learn from death to persist through this unforgiving world. And you aren’t alone. Dark Souls allows the spirits of other players to show up in your world, so you can learn from their deaths and they can learn from yours. New to Dark Souls is Beacon Fire, where you can share the experiences of your adventure with the spirits of other players. Around the Beacon Fire, you may find the only warmth and calm that exists in this dark world. Beware: There is no place in Dark Souls that is truly safe. With days of game play and an even more punishing difficulty level, Dark Souls will be the most deeply challenging game you play this year. Can you live through a million deaths and earn your legacy?
Extremely Deep, Dark & Difficult: Unforgiving in its punishment, yet rewarding for the determined – learn to strategize freely and conquer seemingly impossible challenges.
Fully Seamless World: Explore a completely integrated world of dark fantasy where dungeons are seamlessly intertwined, with great height.
Mastery Earns Progression: Contains 60 hours of gameplay, with nearly 100 uniquely despair‐inducing monsters & an incredibly nuanced weaponry & magic spells system. Player success depends on their eventual mastery of how and when to use the magic spells, choice of armor, the number of weapons, the types of weapons, and the moves attached to the weapons.
Network Play: Players may cross paths with one another, interacting with each other throughout the game even as each player plays their own game.
Flexible Character Development & Role Play: As the player progresses, they must carefully choose which of their character’s abilities to enhance as this will determine their progression style.
Community: See other real players and empathize with their journey, learn from seeing how others died, find and leave messages for your fellow players; helping them or leading them into death.
Symbolic of Life & Hope: The Beacon Fire is an important feature of Dark Souls for many reasons. Though in gameplay it serves as a recovery and re‐spawn point for players whose health gets low and is the one place in the dark world where players can find a fleeting moment of warmth and calm.

One of the Best PS3 Games Review by bkofe

Dark Souls is challenging, there is no doubt about that. The game forces you to learn the ropes before you start feeling the rewards. There is no hand holding. BUT once you get the feel for your weapons and shield, things get easier.
You will die, pretty often actually, but every death will be fair. There are only two exceptions. The Tomb of the Giants can be insanely difficult because you have to trade your shield for a lantern. I won't spoil to much for you, but their is a piece of equipment and a spell that will provide you light and you can keep your shield. The other exception is one area in Anor Londo with two Black Knight Archers. This specific spot is made 100% easier if you are able to summon help online.
The combat is excellent. Every weapon feels differently. Every weapon has different swing speed and a different move set. Even each different bow shoots differently. There is a incredible amount of sorcery, miracles, and pyromancy at your disposal.
The scenery is absolutely incredible. Every boss and mini-boss looks great and 99% of the entire game has incredible details.
Don't let people scare you off with the difficulty. Once you get the flow of the combat down, you will be able to make it all the way to the glorious finish. It took me a good 10 hours to really get a grasp of what it took to survive in the Dark Souls world, but after that it was nothing more than just enjoying the trip.
I am on my 4th play through right now. I am not tired of it at all. (Posted on 9/5/12)
Best game of 2012. A must buy for hardcore gamers only. Review by gnine

The game continues its theme of an atmospheric medieval environment however this instalment has opted for an open world style, a wise decision that adds to exploration as well as helps create a larger more terrifying world. There are multiple branching paths possible from the off, advancing and testing different out routes is a new and welcome addition to the strategy.
The same punishment of death mechanic is incorporated from Demon's Souls providing the same risk verses reward gambit to progression. However the game play has been reworked and tightened up to refine the already excellently balanced design. Aside from some frame rate issues that only become bothersome in a select few areas the technical experience is solid. Visuals have been ramped up and the aesthetic design is stylish and fitting to the experience.
Combat is even more intense with a slew of new enemy formations and improved AI, a whole new list of considerations are introduced. Trying to reach as far out into the dangerous world as possible, while retaining as many supplies as you can makes the decision to press on or make a hasty retreat a constant consideration. Being rewarded with the unlocking of a short cut or the reaching a bonfire will always be met with a huge sigh of relief.
The excellent and innovative online functionality makes a much welcome return. It remains nonintrusive during regular play sessions and a vital boon for those all important hints left by fellow players. Of course becoming invaded when in human form is another matter and one to be explored to a fuller extent in the later stages of the game should you want to become a part of the large PvP community.
Dark Souls has a larger more terrifying world, filled with secrets and surprises. This game is leaner, meaner and improved in every way from the original. It's as horrifyingly difficult as it is technically brilliant. A must experience for the gamer who can stomach the challenge. (Posted on 9/4/12)
